A. Lange and Söhne was founded in 1845, but it hasn't enjoyed the same kind of continuity as brands like Audemars and Patek: After World War II, the East German company was closed by the Soviet regime, and it didn't reopen until 1990. Since then, though, Lange has produced some rather noteworthy capitalist tools, including the Lange 31, thus named on account of its 31-day power reserve. The Grand Saxonia does its own nifty trick: A "zero reset" mechanism snaps the second hand to zero when the crown is pulled to set the watch, making synchronization simple. And the movement visible behind the sapphire-crystal case-back is as beautiful as it is effective—indeed, the steel mechanisms are even ribbed for your (viewing) pleasure.
